National Lipstick Day! 💄

Well. This evening started out with all sorts of good intentions. Town to tame my unruly eyebrows then back home to write a blog post that might make the screen before midnight. My car, however, had other ideas….5 minutes from home and I had to pull over and call the nice Green Flag people to come and rescue me from a flashing warning light and unnerving noises coming from the engine. Turns out it was just messing with me as once the recovery driver got it home it was fine! Ahhhh well. T-2 days to our mini holiday…

Anyhow, apparently today was National Lipstick Day, who knew?! I wore one of my favourites for work today in honour 💋

I seem to have tons of lipstick/gloss but always seem to come back to the same three which are always hiding in my makeup bag (hence their battered appearance!)

There are two Clinique favourites and a Soap & Glory staple:

Two Ton Tomato by Clinique: easy to apply and a nice subtle shade

Mightiest Maraschino by Clinique: bright, eye-catching, love it; however I do find it smudges very easily and can be difficult to apply in a nice neat line

Sexy Mother Pucker Extreme Plump by Soap & Glory: for when I want a bit of shine!

I do have a couple of other Chubby Sticks hidden away and I have recently seen Clinique will be releasing some new shades soon…no doubt they will further fuel my addiction

Mani Monday – A Spot of Barry M

Can you believe it is that time of the week again! College is done with, I’ve inhaled some re-heated lasagne (delicious; if I do say so myself) and now I’m sat down ready to write up today’s Mani Monday!

The weather has been gorgeous up North the last few days and today has been no exception – it’s been lovely looking good out at blue skies and sunshine from the comfort of my desk! 😉

In honour of the sunshine I thought today’s nail varnish should be a nice, vibrant, summery shade – step forward Barry M Gelly Hi-shine in Grapefruit!

Somebody Stop Me

I did a bad thing tonight.

I sale shopped.

Ever since I discovered Sugarhill Boutique via Mel of; I have been in love with their stuff. They do lovely feminine prints and floaty skirts and gorgeous dresses…. I’ve been peeking at the sale items for a few weeks and when I noticed there was an extra 20% off this weekend some clothes just magically dropped into my basket!

Arriving this week will be……

Poppy Lux Tilly Top

I’m away this weekend for my birthday and then away for a girls’ weekend in Glasgow the weekend after; so I’m sure I’ll get some use out of these pretty quickly 🙂

The Glamour Beauty Edit Eventual Review

It’s a bit of a long post for a Saturday night tonight!

You might remember a couple of weeks back I bought the Glamour Beauty Edit Summer Box (you can see the original post here) filled with a load of goodies I’ve never tried before. Since then I’ve been working my way through the contents! You can see what I thought below 🙂 Happy reading!

Bourjois Cream Blush in Rose Tender (rrp £7.99

I’ll start with my favourite item from the Edit. For the last couple of years I have religiously used Benefit’s Hervana blusher; having never found anything else which could come close to being better. This cream blusher from Bourjois, however, has impressed me greatly.

I think the thing I like most about this blusher is that it is a lot more subtle and gives a nice dewy effect. It’s a nice summer blusher and works well with highlighter, big lashes and a statement lipstick.

Bourjois Cream Blush

Magnifibres Brush-On False Lashes (rrp £21)

I am going to show my ignorance here – I had no idea you could buy brush-on false lashes. This is a revelation! I have never liked the thought of sticking false lashes to my eyes, having known a few people who’ve had bad reactions; so this is a good alternative to have in the make-up bag for a night on the tiles. This did make my eyelashes quite a bit longer than usual so I think I will be saving this for weekends and nights out (I tried it for work one day and felt a touch overdressed) but overall, a thumbs up from me for Magnifibres.

Crabtree & Evelyn Nail Lacquer in Apple (rrp £6

I reviewed this nail varnish in this week’s Mani Monday (you can have a read here). I hadn’t realised until I bought the box that Crabtree & Evelyn had nail varnish in their armoury; but I like this one muchly!

Illamasqua Glamore Lipstick in Naked (rrp £18.50)

Hhmmm. Not really sure how I feel about this one. I’ve heard and read a lot about Illamasqua in the Twittersphere and have been wanting to try some of their stuff for a while… However; I just don’t think this is my colour. Looking at it in the light it has a nice brown undertone; but when I put it on my lips I just look like I’ve smeared foundation on them. It may just be that I am so used to wearing deep reds and pinks that this is a bit of a shock to look at, so I’ll persevere with it for a little while and try some different eye make-up out with it etc… but I haven’t been brave enough to leave the house wearing it yet 😉

DHC Deep Cleansing Oil (rrp £21.50 for 200ml)

Never cleansed with oil. Different. But I like it! Left my skin soft and feeling squeaky clean.

Toni & Guy Glamour Volume Plumping Whip (rrp £7.19)

I think if I have any advice to give for this product; it would be use in moderation. I used this for the first time on a training night and it was pretty late by the time I had showered and got round to drying my hair. I scooped up a walnut-sized amount, as they suggest, and massaged it into the roots of my hair; but it ended up a greasy mess and I had to get up early the next morning to re-wash my barnet. The second time I used it was much better, but I used much less and even then it did leave my fringe feeling a little stringy. The rest of my hair did look like it had a bit more volume, however!

Hawaiian Tropic Satin Protection Sun Lotion; SPF 30 (rrp £5.99

I used this today as I sat sunning myself in the garden; enjoying Newcastle’s tropical heat wave! It’s non-greasy and smells of summer. What more could you want?

Rimmel Sunshimmer Instant Tan BB Perfector and Velvotan Tanning Mitt (rrp £6.99 and £2.99

I’m useless with fake tan. No matter how much I exfoliate and moisturise; you can guarantee that I will always end up with a streak down my arms and white shins. Someone told me recently that wash-off instant tan is much easier to apply effectively; so fingers crossed!! I’ve never tried a tanning mitt either so hopefully that will also help to reduce my errors 😉

Phew, that took a while! Thanks for reading!

Over and out

A Spot of Sunshine

I LOVE fresh flowers. It’s just a small touch but I think they can really make a room look welcoming and feel more like a home.

This is slightly problematic when you factor in my ridiculous hay fever; but I’m willing to overlook some sneezes and sniffles in favour of some fresh roses 🙂 At any rate, my hay fever seems (touch wood) to finally be calming down!

My manager is going off on maternity leave tomorrow, and I popped into Marks & Spencer over lunch to buy her a little parting gift. I spotted some little vases of bright yellow flowers and had to buy one for her…. then bought another one for me too 🙂 I’ve been wanting a little vase for my desk for ages but hadn’t found one; the flowers won’t last long but I figure I will be able to re-use it and fill with flowers from the garden; so it’s an investment really….

They have some gorgeous arrangements; I’m sure I’ll end up buying more before the summer’s out!

Mani Monday – Crabtree & Evelyn

Little bit late with my post tonight (it’s only barely still Monday!), it has been one of those evenings! However I’m now sat down for two minutes so I can type this up 🙂

Up until I ordered the Glamour Beauty Edit from Latest in Beauty, I had no idea that Crabtree & Evelyn even sold nail varnish – I’ve bought plenty of hand cream from them but not a whole lot else so far. When I received the box I was very pleased to see I’d received the red version. I do love a nice red nail varnish!

It gets the thumbs up from me – the colour is lovely and the application is nice and smooth. Very worthy of today’s Mani Monday 🙂

The World’s Happiest 5K

If you saw yesterday’s post; you’ll know that today I was running the Color Run in Sunderland. This has been in the calendar since the beginning of the year; but until the race pack arrived a few weeks ago; I have to admit I had almost forgotten about it!

Over the course of the run, you pass through 4 different coloured ‘zones’ – pink, blue, orange and yellow – at which points lots of willing volunteers stand ready and waiting with buckets full of paint powder, which they throw at the participants as they pass through. The idea is that your white event t-shirt comes away looking anything but white at the end! When you finish the race you are handed your own paint pack to make a mess with at the afterparty 🙂

The run was routed in the streets and land around the Stadium of Light; with the start and finish areas in the main car park. By the finish there was a stage with a DJ to host the ‘finisher’s party’, a couple of stalls selling merchandise and an area for photos. Sadly both James and I had left our phones at home so we missed our opportunity for a photo shoot with the Dulux dog 😉

I’ve been struggling a bit with my running of late and feeling a bit burnt out and out of shape; so the run today was just what I needed. The atmosphere was more party than run and you couldn’t help but grin as you watched everyone run past coated head to toe in paint! It wasn’t timed and there were so many people that you couldn’t really have taken it fast; even if you had wanted to. So instead, we had a nice, steady, gentle jog and just enjoyed it. We were also lucky enough to bump into a friend mid-way through the run who took the below photo for us.

At £29.99 all in the Color Run was a lot more than I would ever usually fork out for a 5k; however I have to say I think it was well worth it. It was a brilliant day and it’s also great to see events like this popping up in the North-East. There are other themed runs coming up over the rest of the year; such as the Neon Run in October; that I might just have to try out as well 🙂

Color Runspiration

Tomorrow I’ll be participating in the Color Run in Sunderland. It sells itself as ‘the happiest 5k on the planet’ – it’s non-timed and sponsored by Dulux; and runners have a different coloured paint powder thrown at them at each kilometre. A few girls from my running club did the Manchester edition last year and said it was brilliant! I’m really looking forward to it; it looks like great fun!

If you’ve never heard of this running phenomenon; have a look at the video below:

Now of course, being me, my nails have to be painted specially for the race with a Color Run theme – a quick browse of Pinterest was all it took to find the inspiration for my Color Run nails 🙂

To achieve the stippled effect; I used a thin nail art brush to dab yellow, green and then pink nail varnish over a white base coat. Nice and easy!

Glamour Summer Beauty Edit

As I was procrastinating browsing on instagram last week, I came across the Glamour Beauty Edit box from Latest in Beauty. The box contains loads of goodies from the likes of Illamasqua, Crabtree & Evelyn and Toni & Guy, all for the meagre sum of £16.95.

This is my first Latest in Beauty investment and whenever I order anything online I’m always impatient as a child at Christmas waiting for it to arrive; so I’ve been stalking the tracking details all week…. finally when I got home from work tonight it was waiting for me!

Full review of the contents to follow; but for the meantime have a look at some pretty pictures 😁

Tuesdays are training days!

Tonight was a running night – my club (the mighty Tyne Bridge Harriers) meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening.

Confession…. it has been a little while since I’ve religiously attended club sessions. Alright; maybe a bit longer than that. OK, OK. I cannot remember the last time I went to both club sessions in a week.

In fairness; up until the end of May I was training for Edinburgh Marathon Festival, my second attempt at 26.2. I might throw my race report up soon for you to read 🙂 Marathons are draining little buggers and do take a lot more out of you than you realise; as I found out on the few runs I did in the weeks following the event – I felt slow, sluggish, generally tired and not at all my usual running self. Add to that a spot of plantar fasciitis and I was often finding excuses to miss my training runs.

My beloved Asics have been a little abandoned of late

Until, that is, last Tuesday, when we held our annual Bridges of the Tyne 5 Mile Road Race. The route is often used on club nights and for Long Run Sundays, so it was all familiar territory….but I just wasn’t feeling it. I ran my slowest race pace for over a year and felt absolutely awful throughout the whole thing. I had let my fitness slip a lot more than I realised.

Last week’s race was a wake-up call and has given me the kick I needed to get back into shape and back to training. Binging on unhealthy foods and skipping runs ‘because I ran a marathon a couple of weeks ago and I deserve a rest’ does not cut it any more. Cross training and regular and varied club sessions are the way forward!

I will keep you all up to date with my progress.. first up is the Color Run this Sunday, which will be great fun 🙂

Color Run’s coming!
